How to add and use Claude skills

A skill is a folder with a SKILL.md file: instructions, and sometimes scripts or templates, that teach Claude a specific job. Claude only reads a skill when your task needs it, so you can install many without slowing anything down.

1

One command

Works with Claude Code, Cursor, Codex and more. The open-source skills CLI downloads a skill and puts it in the right folder for your coding agent. Every skill page here has its exact command. You need Node.js installed.

$ npx skills add anthropics/skills --skill frontend-design

Add -g to install it for all your projects instead of just the current one.

2

Manually in Claude Code

Download a skill's ZIP from its page, unzip it, and put the folder in one of these places:

  • ~/.claude/skills/: personal skills, available in every project
  • .claude/skills/ inside a project: shared with everyone who works on that repo

Start a new session and Claude Code picks the skill up automatically.

3

In the Claude app

  1. Download the skill's ZIP from its page. Keep it zipped.
  2. Open Customize → Skills (on older versions, Settings → Capabilities).
  3. Upload the ZIP and switch the skill on.

Custom skills need a paid plan with code execution enabled. See Anthropic's help article for the latest steps.

4

As a Claude Code plugin

Some publishers ship a whole suite of skills, agents and scripts as one plugin. Type two commands inside Claude Code: the first adds the publisher's marketplace, the second installs the plugin.

> /plugin marketplace add AgriciDaniel/claude-seo
> /plugin install claude-seo@agricidaniel-claude-seo

Skill pages show these commands whenever a skill comes from a plugin.

5

Use skills in Claude Code

You don't need to call a skill by name. Claude reads the description of every installed skill and loads the right one when your request matches, so “make this landing page look less generic” is enough to pull in a design skill.

  • To run one on purpose, type / and its name, such as /frontend-design, or just say “use the frontend-design skill”.
  • To see what's installed, ask Claude “what skills do you have?”
  • Skills are picked up when a session starts, so open a new session after adding one.
6

Stay safe

Skills can contain scripts that Claude runs on your computer. Stick to publishers you trust, and skim the SKILL.md before installing. Every skill on StealIt links straight to its source on GitHub so you can check it.
